William Campbell Gault was already a noted mystery writer, a rising star even, when he gave up writing crime stories to focus on sports books for kids (no, not that kind of "sports book"). As he'd already been writing about former L. A. Ram Brock "The Rock" Callahan, this wasn't that much of a stretch. Gault returned to the hardboiled fold with The Cana Diversion, bringing back not only Callahan but his other series detective, Joe Puma.
It's hard not to compare Callahan and Puma. Callahan is a bluff, standup guy, nice even, with a steady PI practice and a steady girlfried to match. Puma, on the other hand, is long on angst, has a mean streak, and scrapes by however he can. The Rock points the way towards Dan Fortune and Dave Brandstetter, while Puma is a throwback to Philip Marlowe. Both were good, in their own ways, and that fact says as much as anything can about Gault's skill as a writer.
