Texas native Rick Riordan was living in San Francisco when he created the character of Tres Navarre from a series of what-ifs: What if he'd gone back to college and completed his doctorate? What if he moved home to San Antonio? The result was the engaging English professor/PI, who's starred in four books so far. The books are notable for tight plotting, carefully drawn characters, and lots of South Texas flavor. In addition to the novels, Riordan's short story "Ticket To Midland" was the highlight of the all-original anthology The Shamus Game, standing up well against stories by private eye veterans like Bill Pronzini and Loren D. Estleman.
He has since written a well-regarded nonseries novel, Cold Springs, and in 2004 has a new Tres Navarre book out, called Southtown.
Riordan hasn't let stardom go to his head; he still teaches middle school English, which he says is as rewarding as writing.
