Though probably better known in the world of comic books, Greg Rucka burst on the scene in 1996 with his Shamum-nominated first novel, Keeper. In it he introduced bodyguard Atticus Kodiak, mild-mannered but possessed by the desire to help those in need and the butt-kicking ability to do it. His cases have gotten progressively more interesting, especially in Shooting At Midnight, told mostly from the point of view of Atticus' on again, off again love, Bridgett Logan.
The regular characters in the series are mostly young and hip - many have various rings and piercings - but never come off as caricatures, mainly because Rucka himself is young and (persumably) hip. Originally from the Monterey Peninsula south of San Francisco, he's lived in New York and Los Angeles, and currently makes his home in Oregon. As I mentioned, when he's not writing crime novels he's working on various comic book series, where he's known throughout the rabid comic book/sci-fi fandom.
